          March 19, 甘肃快3走势图

          Students, Faculty, and Staff,

Since my last communication, you have received several emails from Provost Sindt, as well as from other members of the Lewis leadership team, updating you on specifics of how Lewis is moving forward during the coronavirus pandemic. The leadership team has been engaged with many members of our community, and is taking into account your questions and concerns as we continue to adapt the university to this fluid situation.

The first and most important message that I want each of you to hear is that we care about your health and safety and that of your family and loved ones. We know how difficult and anxiety-producing this time is, especially as many of us are also worried about loved ones who are far more vulnerable to the virus than we are. For reasons of safety, as has been previously communicated, our students are moving out of the residence halls, and we are moving as many of our employees as possible into remote working environments.

As we have begun to shift to online delivery of all classes and to remote working by our colleagues, I have been inspired by the creativity, empathy, and passion each of you has demonstrated during this transition. During this unprecedented time, I am proud to be part of the Lewis University community. Through association, we are all working together to support each other in our common commitment to fulfill our academic mission.

At this point, we do not have any suspected or confirmed cases of COVID-19 within the Lewis community. Our nation’s leaders are asking that we all work together to attempt to “flatten the curve” of the spread of this virus. As we continue to maximize social distance, wash our hands regularly, and follow recommendations by the CDC, it is also important to recognize that, despite these efforts, some in our community will likely become infected with the virus. This will not be a failure on the part of anyone. This evolving global pandemic has affected individuals from diverse cultures and faiths and at all levels of education and economic circumstance. I ask that you continue to treat each other, especially those who may become sick, with the respect and compassion that are hallmarks of our Lewis community.

To our students, we know that you are being asked to learn in a modality that is new and potentially uncomfortable for many, but we believe in your ability to excel in this new environment. I also want to acknowledge the many losses that you are experiencing, from missing out on time with your friends, to making memories through theatre productions and athletic competitions. This is even more poignant for our seniors. I know that this is not the way you wanted to see your Lewis University years end, and we are saddened by the timing of this world-wide crisis and the impact on your lives.

To our employees, I need each of you to be creative in the work that you do in the coming months. This is not a time in which “business as usual” will work. This means that many of you will be asked to do work and perform tasks that you were not originally hired to do. It is a time when many will work from 甘肃快3走势图 even when their role does not easily translate to a remote work environment. It is also the case that some will be required to be present on campus when most of our community is working remotely. We are especially grateful to those in this situation. It is a reality of these circumstances that not everyone can be treated in the same manner. Overall, we need even more creative ideas and diligent work than ever, because we are committed to delivering an excellent educational experience to our students throughout the duration of this outbreak. We cannot do this without your contributions. You are essential to our success.

I am so grateful to be a part of the Lewis community and to watch as we rise to this challenge and excel in the midst of the difficulties and disruptions that this crisis creates.

Thank you again, and many blessings to you and your families.

          Dr. David J. Livingston

          FOR FACULTY [ + ]

          Dear Faculty,

As the presence of COVID-19 in our region continues to grow, we have decided that it is necessary to take proactive measures to promote the health and well-being of our students and community.   Social distancing is recommended by the Centers for Disease Control in order to control the spread of COVID-19, and the best way for Lewis to protect our students is to transition from regular classroom meetings to online instruction. In order to facilitate a rapid yet effective transition, we have decided that:

          • All courses originally scheduled to be online will proceed as planned on March 16.
          • All courses originally scheduled to be face-to-face will be delayed by one week, resuming in a fully online format on Monday, March 23.
          • The delay of one week for all face-to-face courses will provide opportunities for faculty training and course redevelopment.
          • Learning outcomes for all courses will remain the same.
          • Even though students will not be attending classes on campus, faculty and staff will continue to be present and daily university operations will continue.
Registration for Summer and Fall terms will continue as planned. I will send out further guidance on how to conduct advising remotely.
          • An update will be provided by Monday, April 6 on the status of resuming face-to-face classes.

I realize that this will be challenging.  Given our commitment to quality instruction as well as the central role that relationship building between students and faculty plays in learning, Lewis is committed to providing you with tools and training that enable you to create engaging and interactive learning experiences for your students.

To help you prepare for this transition, the Faculty Center will provide extensive support to faculty in the following ways:

          • Webinar Series:  webinars on a variety of topics, appropriate for those new to online teaching as well as those with experience will be offered between March 16 and 20.  Topics will be repeated in order to accommodate faculty schedules.  The webinar schedule will be distributed by Friday, March 13.

          • Blackboard Shell:  an instructional blackboard shell named “Keep Teaching” has been created for all faculty and will be available by Friday, March 13.  It is a repository of resources and advice for teaching online.  Look for the link to the shell under “courses” on your Blackboard 甘肃快3走势图page.

          • Keep Teaching Website:  a website with resources to support online teaching has been created.

          • Individualized Consultation:  if you have attended a workshop, reviewed the posted resources, and need individualized support, click here to submit a question using the service desk.  A member of the Faculty Center staff will contact you as soon as possible to provide individual support.

The transition to online learning is also an opportunity to support one another. If you are an experienced online instructor and are interested in working with faculty new to the online environment, contact Anne Rapp at rappan@ to offer your support.

Because this is an emergent situation, we are still exploring solutions for learning that require presence on campus, in communities, at schools, at private businesses, or healthcare institutions.  Deans are currently working with faculty to identify approaches that meet students’ learning needs.  These approaches will vary by discipline and college.  If you have questions about alternative approaches to experiential learning, contact your dean directly.

We realize that this will be challenging and that there are still unanswered questions.  The learning experience will be different in the online environment, but it can still be engaging, interactive, and enriching.

Thank you for your commitment to our students.

          Dear Faculty,

As you make the transition to fully online instruction, the Faculty Center has developed additional resources to support you.  These include the:

          • Keep Teaching” website through this link.  The website is accessible on the Faculty Center 甘肃快3走势图page and Lewis’s COVID-19 site under Teaching and Learning. On the website, you will find resources for online teaching.

          • Webinars that have been archived and are accessible whenever you need them.  To access the archived Keep Teaching webinars, click on this link.

          • “Keep Teaching” blackboard shell.  All faculty teaching during the Spring 甘肃快3走势图 term have been added to this course shell.  Just click on “Courses” from your Blackboard 甘肃快3走势图page, and it will be listed with your other courses.  The blackboard shell contains the following self-directed modules:
            • Course Availability, Announcements, and Navigation
            • Adding the Syllabus and Content
            • Discussions and Student Engagement
            • Creating, Grading, and Collecting Assignments
            • Tests
            • Online Collaboration and Asynchronous Options
            • Streaming Videos in Your Course using ShareStream
            • Setting up the Grade Center
          • Contact the Faculty Center for individualized support.
            • Since the Center anticipates a high volume of questions, please access the service desk ticketing system with this link, log in using your Lewis credentials, and submit your question.
            • A member of the staff will reach out to you as soon as possible.

We appreciate the creative ways that you are using technology during this time.  Please be advised that the Faculty Center cannot support electronic tools that are not within the Blackboard Suite.

Once again, we acknowledge these are challenging circumstances and we appreciate all you do for our students.

In compliance with public health officials’ guidance, several social distancing measures are being implemented on all our campuses

          • Supervisors are making arrangements for remote working where possible, and identifying other accommodations. Reducing the number of employees in the workplace is a critical step to protect the health of our colleagues whose jobs cannot be performed from 甘肃快3走势图.
          • All public events are canceled until April 14.
          • All internal meetings and events with more than 25 attendees are canceled.

Visit the Lewis University Master Calendar for a list of events that are occurring on campus.

Alumni events will be updated at alumni webpage.

All university-sponsored travel (international and domestic) is being suspended. We ask that you follow for personal travel plans. Decisions to cancel, postpone, or continue personal travel plans need to be assessed according to your comfort level.   Be aware, however, that you may be asked by your local health department to self-quarantine upon return.  In this case, please contact your supervisor and Human Resources to determine if remote work is possible.
